More Test in Less Space:  Driving Down the Size of Test

As silicon wafers, wireless devices and military systems have increased in complexity, multi-port vector network analysis with S-parameters has become an indispensable tool. A few years ago, vector network analysis with four-port capability was a common need. A variety of next-generation products then entered the market, requiring 8-port measurements, and some manufacturers responded. The trend continued with the following generation requiring 16-port capability, and 32-port requirements are on the near horizon.

Along with this trend, many organizations are seeking to drive down the size of test with more capability per cubic inch in their test stations. 5G to Disrupt the Test Equipment Market

The coming 5G wave is set to not only disrupt the communications sector, but also the test equipment that serves it.  While some traditional instrument product categories may be utilized in the development of 5G, the real heavy lifting will be performed by instrumentation not yet invented. The combinations of frequency, spectrum width, data rates, and multi-antenna architectures are simply not present in today’s instruments. But one thing is clear: modular instruments will play a primary enabling role for 5G.  To explain why, let me first explain what 5G is all about.

What is 5G?

Simply put, 5G is the next generation cellular standard, the fifth generation.  The first cell phones were analog-based, such as Motorola’s AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System).

The system timing slot of the PXIe chassis has three dedicated differential pairs that you can use for high-speed triggering, synchronization, and clocking with a maximum slot-to-slot skew of 150 ps.
