PXI System Alliance Links

Welcome to the December 2010 edition of the PXI Newsletter. Our intent is to educate and inform you about how the PXI standard is being used in automated test systems for a wide variety of industries.

PXI and CompactPCI: PXI’s major strength comes from the fact that it uses proven industry-standard technology.  PXI leverages CompactPCI and adds the best features of Windows and VXI.

PXI is defined in the open PXI specification governed by the PXI Systems Alliance. PXI builds on the CompactPCI core specification and defines additional mechanical, software, and electrical requirements for building components that can be used in modular instrumentation systems for measurement and automation applications. PXI and CompactPCI are completely interoperable allowing you to use any core CompactPCI product in a PXI system and vice-versa.

In the main article of this issue, Modular Instrumentation -- A View of the Market, we offer the insights of the Aeroflex Test Solutions PXI product manager, Tim Carey. In New PXI Products, we are showcasing PXI products recently released by members of the PXI Systems Alliance.

Modular Instrumentation – A View of the Market

by Tim Carey, PXI Product Manager
Aeroflex Test Solutions

The market for PXI modular instrumentation is relatively mature, with a stable number of suppliers and products.  Nevertheless, the market  continues to grow at a respectable rate. Aeroflex leverages PXI technology across our organization. PXI provides the platform for our line of modular components and we use it internally as the technology underlying our stand-alone instruments and our integrated system/Automated Test Equipment (ATE) solutions.

Demands on frequency range, signal bandwidth, and general performance are all continually increasing in line with the demands of modern communications standards. Aeroflex is in the process of developing our fifth generation of PXI modules for stimulus and analysis needs, having completed our fourth generation during 2009. New module variants are being introduced to reinforce our established position in existing markets as well as enabling diversification into new growth markets.
